WELCOME, CITYLEBRITY. YOU HOLD THE KEY.

BIO: Emma Lois Smith Dukes (née Tucker) was an accomplished entrepreneur, master beautician, and community leader based in Atlanta, Georgia. Over a career spanning more than 50 years, she established herself as a vital figure in Black haircare and entrepreneurship, most notably through her landmark salon, Lois' House of Beauty. Working alongside her husband, Roy J. Dukes, she developed her custom product line, Beautician’s Choice — a professional haircare line born from a simple, firsthand observation: stylists serving diverse hair textures didn’t have nearly enough retail options built for them. What started in her Atlanta salon found its way onto shelves and into the hands of clients and fellow stylists nationwide.

Industry:

Beauty, Personal Care and Wellness

Key #1: Game‑Changer:

{SHE DIDN’T WAIT FOR A LANE; SHE BUILT TWO} Known for her sharp wit, vibrant spirit, and desire to care for people in the community, Lois ran two businesses out of one legacy: a salon with a stellar regional reputation in Atlanta’s Black beauty culture, and a full product line formulated from her own hands-on expertise.

Key #2: Ethos of Uplifting Others:

{THE CHAIR WAS NEVER JUST FOR HER} Lois’ House of Beauty became a cornerstone in the community and where Lois and her co- workers built a blueprint for independent Black female entrepreneurship in the beauty industry. It was where clients came for mutual support, conversation and connections.

Key #3: Real Impact:

{A LEGACY MEASURED IN PEOPLE} Fifty-plus years in the chair. Six children. Eighteen grandchildren. A salon that outlived trends, and a product line that outlived her. Long before an algorithm got to decide what “impact” looked like, Lois had already written her own definition.
